A redesigned Ford Fusion, the return of the Dodge Dart, a new Cadillac, Chevy concept cars, and the latest from auto makers around the globe – it’s a car connoisseur’s dream, and it’s part of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show that opened to the press on Monday in Detroit.

Ford has given the Fusion, which debuted in 2005, a completely new look in its third iteration. Ford hopes to push sales of the Fusion past the Toyota Camry as the best-selling midsize sedan. The Fusion bested both the Honda Accord and the Hyundai Sonata in sales last year.

By introducing the ATS, which it plans to put on sale in late summer, Cadillac wants to compete with the popular BMW 3 series small sport sedan.

Chevy put on display two small concept cars – the Code 130R and the Tru 140S. Both are expected to achieve 40 mpg. Chevy also showcased the 2013 Spark, a 5-door hatchback.

Other highlights:

• Introduction of Chrysler’s Dodge Dart, a return of the sedan this top atop a chassis of an Alfa Romeo made by Chrysler parent Fiat of Italy.

• Looks at concepts from Acura, including the NSX supercar and the ILX compact sedan.

• Porsche showed off its new 911 Carrera coupe. (Joe Deburro, The Republican – Masslive.com)
