Moderate Drinking in Pregnancy Does Not Have Negative Impact on Children

In a recent study, Danish researchers have found out that drinking alcohol in light amount during pregnancy does not have any visible affect on the brain development of child at age five. However, the study result should not be taken as a sort of license when expecting child.

The recent issue of the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, published on Wednesday, June 20, reveals the find outs of five studies conducted on the effects of alcohol on pregnant women. Total 1,628 women took part in those studies.

The studies mainly focused on the effects of alcohol on the IQ; executive functions, such as organization, planning, and self-control; and attention span of the five-year-old children of those volunteer women.

The overall result of the studies was that drinking alcohol in low or moderate quantity, approximately five to eight drinks per week, did not have any negative impact on the neurodevelopment of children.

However, women who are found to take more than nine drinks per day during pregnancy experienced the problem of decrease in ability in their children.
