With a budget of $80 million, Warner Bros.’ space thriller ‘Gravity’ has been rocking the box office. It has earned $17.525 million at the box office on its opening day.
Starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, the movie is directed by Alfonso Cuaron, who also directed the blockbuster ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’.
With this opening day earning, ‘Gravity’ has become the biggest opening weekend movie for Clooney. Earlier, his 1997 movie ‘Batman & Robin’ earned $42.9 million on the opening day. It was a new record opening for Bullock too. Earlier this year, her comedy movie ‘The Heat’ got $39 million start. In fact, it became the fifth such record in her last seven movies. However, it was second best opening weekend for Cuaron, the ‘Harry Potter’ movie was his highest that earned $93 million on the opening day.
The Friday earning of the movie has surpassed even the reasonable expectations. If the movie keeps going like this, it is expected that it will earn $50 million during the weekend.
With $4.7 million at the opening, ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2’ grabbed the second spot at the box office. The former box office champion dipped 49% from its first Friday.
Starring Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck, crime drama ‘Runner Runner’ scored poorly at the box office. The movie was released on 3,026 theaters. However, the $30 million Fox movie could earn only $2.8 million at the opening. It could finish the weekend with an awful $7.5 million.
‘Prisoners’ was in the fourth position with $1.7 million earning while $1.4 million took ‘Don Jon’ on the fifth place. ‘Prisoners’ and ‘Don Jon’ may add another $5.5 million and $4.2 million respectively to their cume.
The top five weekend movies are – ‘Gravity’, ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2’, ‘Runner Runner’, ‘Prisoners’, and ‘Don Jon’.
