Pope Francis encouraged people to be modest and to retain the youth of mind while celebrating his first Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square. During his speech, tens of thousands people waved their hands holding palm fronds and olive branches.
Almost 250,000 enthusiastic pilgrims, Romans, and tourists joined the new Pope at the square. These Holy Week ceremonies will lead to Christianity’s most important day, Easter.
In order to encourage the believers to maintain a simple life, the first Pope from Latin America delivered a spontaneous sermon. He also said that possessing so many things cannot bring joy to anybody but the real joy can be obtained by maintaining the life ordered by Jesus. According to him, people can remain young at heart if they can achieve that joy.
Palm Sunday is observed to commemorate the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. However, its Gospel also narrates how Jesus was betrayed and then, hung on a cross.
The Pope said that Jesus had awakened hopes in the heart of those people who remain insignificant in the eyes of the world.
Francis has put the oppressed and unprivileged at the center of his papal mission since his election on March 13. He is the first Pope who has called himself ‘Francis’, the name of a Saint who renounced a high-class life and embraced poverty and hardships in order to propagate the messages of Jesus among the poor.
Francis presided over the Mass by wearing red robes over a white-colored cassock. He delivered the homily at an altar on the steps of St. Peter’s Basilica. At the time, the Cardinals, who elected him as the new Pope, sat on chairs in front of him.
The Catholic Church will organize the World Youth Day in July in Rio de Janiero. The Pope said that he would be eagerly waiting to welcome young people there.
