Due to a major undersea earthquake, a tsunami was triggered in the Solomon Islands on Wednesday. It left around 100 habitats across five villages damaged or totally devastated.
The tsunami caused 1.5-metre waves in Santa Cruz Island on Wednesday. Among the casualties, the death of nine people was confirmed. On behalf of the prime minister, a spokesman George Herming said that one child and some elderly people died due to heavy rush of water as they while they got sucked under it.
On Thursday, Aid workers fought back to reach far-off villages in the Solomon Island as the death toll mounted from the tsunami. There were several strong aftershocks frightened the residents to return to the coast. Herming said that they were still afraid of returning to their homes, as the tsunami left nothing but the wreckages. So, people were living there in temporary shelters.
A powerful earthquake equal to 8-magnitude that hit near the eastern area in the Solomons created the tsunami.
